Here are a few common questions people have about somatic coaching. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please drop me a line. I'd love to speak with you!
Somatic coaching simply means that you and I will focus on your body while we work. We'll focus on identifying your bodily sensations and how your emotions related to them.
Coaching is not therapy, and coaches are not licensed therapists. Although at times the work may feel therapeutic, the method is designed to discover tools and build skills to help you regulate your nervous system, connect to emotions, and build toward your future goals.
You’ll sometimes hear it put simply as “Therapy is about the past, and coaching is about the future.” In other words, as your coach, I am focused on helping you achieve your future goals, while therapy tends to focus more on healing from your past.
While that’s true, there are a few other key differences. Consider these:
While I believe strongly in the value and power of coaching, I also recognize that there are times when therapy is the correct modality. Some men also pursue both therapy and coaching simultaneously and use each modality to leverage the tools from the other.
In a word: Everyone! No matter where you are in your journey, you stand to gain by working with a Somatic Coach. You’ll especially benefit from somatic coaching if you are:
As our brain tends to want to lead, it often just gets in the way. Coaching helps discover how to feel the full experience from the body's perspective. This allows emotions to be felt and expressed. Negative energy can be re-mapped and shifted to a less controlling, and more connective state. An intimate connection to self is nurtured which leads to self-discovery and healing of stored pain & trauma.
I work to create sessions based on your desired outcome. We establish a safe space to contain our work together, and I simply follow your lead throughout the session while subtly keeping you grounded. Session to session may not appear to progress linearly, but within each session we go deep into your experience, allowing you to voice what you may have never been able to say, and a subconscious shift begins to take place. I also reserve time keep you accountable and on point towards your desired outcome.
If it is a mental health concern, you should refer them to a psychotherapy professional. However, if you believe coaching would benefit them, you may ask them to contact me for a discovery call.
This is the container we create inside of which we work, where my energy matches yours and we both feel at ease connecting with each other. Confidentiality is key - anything you share remains inside our sealed container. Within this "safe space" the stress response (fight, flight, freeze) tends to be more at ease and it allows meaningful work to happen.
Coaching sessions are either 60 or 90 minutes. During your discovery call, we'll discuss your goals and which session length will most benefit you. Most clients benefit from 60-minute sessions, but this process is always focused on your needs first. Sessions take place primarily on Zoom. Live, in-person sessions may also be available.
I ask my clients for a minimum of a 3-month commitment. This allows for us to create our container, dig deep, align goals, and see results.
